Some of you out there may still be wondering why cans? We thought we’d give you some insight as to why we’re big fans of the can.
Compared to bottles, cans block out all the light. As light is destructive to those precious organic compounds in the beer that make the flavours we are so crazy about; we’d prefer that not to happen. We like our beer to stay fresh.
The very crux of the design means that cans are better than bottles at keeping out all the oxygen, they form a perfect airtight seal with none of the headspace that bottled beer has to contend with. And as oxidation is the biggest enemy of a great tasting brew, we like to avoid that.
Cans are basically like mini-kegs, they’re more shelf-stable. This means that our beer is going to last longer and retain its quality, which means our brewing team is very happy. And when our brewing team is happy, we’re all happy round here.
Cans are cheaper to produce and better for the environment, which means we’re all winning here because not only can we bring our beer to you at a better price, we can do this with packaging that is 100% recyclable, using less of it. By moving the same amount of product in fewer trips reduces our carbon footprint, which makes us a bit greener on the environment. We like that.
Since can technology has advanced, modern cans are now lined to prevent interaction with the contents and in a range of blind tests, canned craft brews have consistently had a slight edge over bottles. We think it makes sense; after all, we all like craft beer from the tap and that is effectively coming out of a giant 30L “can”.
As aluminum retains its properties indefinitely it can be reused significantly more times than glass. Approximately 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today, did you know that? That’s quite a lot!
We love the outdoors here in NZ and we love our good beer too, so why not make it easier to carry along your favourite brews without the extra weight? They’re sturdy little guys (not going to break on you) and easily transportable means they’re even easier to pack whether you’re heading outdoors, off to the beach or a barbecue, out in your boat or to a summer concert. Since cans cool faster than glass, you can put them somewhere cool in the outdoors and enjoy a refreshing brew in minutes. It’s that mini-keg thing again. No bottle opener required and they’re crushable on the return home. Easy as.
We like that we’re one of the breweries turning the craft beer industry on its head. Craft beer used to be all about the packaging and while we do love good packaging (we showcase this on our aluminium!), we reckon that cans recapture a throwback to a simpler time, this makes us feel a little nostalgic. In a good way.
